A master of public administration may not be as popular as an MBA but a significant number of people still do pursue them. Admissions procedures are different with all programs, especially when comparing school to school. However, there is a common list of elements that most admissions committees are looking for.
Typically, graduates of public administration degrees are seen in high regard as many admissions committees in most institutions try to stick to a high standard. In order to keep it that way, many institutions are quite strict when it comes to their admissions requirements. Typically, students who want to pursue a master’s degree in public administration should have earned a bachelor’s degree. Although not required, a bachelor of public administration degree or a similar field will be best. The more prominent institutions may require an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution.
Applicants are normally required to have achieved a certain Grade Point Average or GPA. Similar to other master’s degree programs, institutions see this as a strict requirement. However, it is possible for some schools to put more emphasis on experience rather than on educational background.
There are some graduate programs that require their students to have at least two years of working experience, some even three. However, not just any kind of working experience will do. Your resume should show how your experience requirements will be applicable to your master’s degree.
Public administration usually involves graduates in the non-profit, government and non-government sectors. Although public administration degree holders can have great flexibility in career choices, your work experience for your application will need to be heavily involved in the field.
